ABOUT
About Ceven'Trail
The Ceven'Trail is the flagship ultra-trail of the Cevennes, a 101-kilometer course with 4,800 meters of elevation gain that crosses one of the most distinctive and endearing massifs in southern France. Starting from Le Vigan, a small Cevenol town nestled at the foot of Mont Aigoual, this October race takes runners through the grandiose landscapes of the Cevennes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Between schist ridges, deep valleys, centuries-old chestnut groves, and arid causses, the Ceven'Trail offers a total immersion in a land of character.
The start in Le Vigan places runners in the heart of the southern Cevennes, in the region where the foothills of the Massif Central plunge toward the Mediterranean plain. Cevenol terrain is immediately recognizable: the serres -- long schist ridges radiating from the summits -- alternate with valats, deeply incised wooded valleys that cut through the relief. Trails follow ancient drailles, centuries-old transhumance paths along which flocks once climbed from the garrigues to high-altitude pastures. The schist and granite soil offers variable grip depending on moisture, and descents on flagstone slabs polished by centuries of use demand constant attention.
The climb to Mont Aigoual (1,565 m), the highest point on the course, is a defining moment of the race. This legendary summit, known for its extreme weather conditions -- it receives an average of 2,200 mm of rain per year and winds regularly exceed 100 km/h -- houses one of the last active mountain meteorological observatories in France. From the summit on a clear day, the view extends from Mont Ventoux to the Mediterranean, from the Alps to the Pyrenees. The Aigoual state forest, replanted in the 19th century to combat catastrophic slope erosion, offers sumptuous forest trails beneath beeches and firs.
The Cevennes are a land of memory and resilience. Runners pass through abandoned hamlets, cultivation terraces reclaimed by vegetation, witnesses to a peasant civilization that shaped every square meter of this mountain for centuries. Chestnut groves, once called the 'bread tree' of the Cevennes, line the trails with their gnarled, centuries-old trunks. In October, chestnuts carpet the ground and autumn colors set the valleys ablaze in shades of russet, gold, and crimson. The atmosphere is that of a terroir race, where aid stations offer pelardon goat cheese, dry sausage, and chestnut juice.
The Ceven'Trail is accessible to runners with ultra-trail experience, without requiring the technical level of Alpine races. The elevation gain is sustained but altitudes remain modest, eliminating concerns about thin air. The difficulty lies more in the accumulation of climbs and descents on occasionally technical terrain, and in managing fatigue over 101 kilometers. October weather in the Cevennes can be unpredictable: Cevenol episodes, the region's characteristic torrential rains, cannot be ruled out. Reliable waterproof equipment is essential. The Ceven'Trail is a race that nourishes the soul as much as the body, in a territory that carries within it the history and wild beauty of the southern mountains.
