ABOUT

About Trail des Elfes et Druides

The Trail des Elfes et Druides is a 20-kilometre trail race with 800 metres of elevation gain, starting from Ventron, a mountain village nestled in the upper Moselotte Valley in the Vosges mountains. This fantasy-themed event takes runners through the deep forests and rounded summits of the High Vosges, in a setting of misty fir groves, mysterious peat bogs, and altitude meadows that seems straight out of the Celtic and Germanic legends that have haunted this massif for centuries.

Ventron, a family ski resort and authentic mountain village at 660 metres altitude, is tucked into a green valley ringed by summits exceeding 1,200 metres. The village, with its Baroque church overlooking granite houses with colourful shutters, is the gateway to the high Vosges chaumes — those wind-swept altitude meadows that crown the rounded summits, or "ballons," characteristic of the range. The Trail des Elfes et Druides draws its inspiration from rich Vosgian folklore: legends of spring fairies, mine dwarves, druids officiating in forest clearings, and elves dancing on the chaumes during solstice nights feed the imagination of this unique race.

The course plunges into the spruce and fir forests covering the slopes of the upper Moselotte Valley. The trails wind beneath a dense canopy that filters light into a vegetal cathedral atmosphere, where mossy trunks and giant ferns compose a setting worthy of a fairy tale. Runners cross altitude peat bogs — those relic ecosystems from the Ice Age where sphagnum moss forms spongy carpets and sundews, miniature carnivorous plants, trap insects in their dewdrops. The passages across the summit chaumes offer 360-degree panoramas over the Vosges chain, the Alsatian plain, and on clear days, the line of the Bernese Alps on the horizon.

With 800 metres of elevation gain over 20 kilometres, the Trail des Elfes et Druides offers a condensed but accessible mountain profile. The climbs through the Vosgian forests are progressive and steady, following trails well-marked by the Club Vosgien. The typically Vosgian terrain alternates between forest paths carpeted with conifer needles — pleasantly cushioning — and chaumes sections where short grass and protruding stones require a change of stride. The descents, on sometimes muddy trails scattered with roots, demand caution, especially in forest sections where Vosgian humidity keeps the ground slippery for much of the year.

The Trail des Elfes et Druides stands out for its festive and imaginative atmosphere that enchants participants beyond the sporting effort. The course is dotted with artistic installations, characters costumed as elves and druids who cheer runners through the undergrowth, and themed entertainment at aid stations that transforms each checkpoint into a fairy-tale waypoint. This playful dimension takes nothing away from the wild beauty of the terrain: the High Vosges harbour remarkable fauna including the capercaillie — an iconic endangered species — the Eurasian lynx reintroduced to the massif, and the Vosges chamois. The flora includes rare species such as the alpine anemone and bog cranberry. The Trail des Elfes et Druides is an enchanted interlude in the trail calendar — a race that proves magic can arise from the meeting of physical effort and collective imagination, in a Vosges massif that has never stopped inspiring wonder.
