Trail des Roches de Solutré

The Trail des Roches de Solutré is a 25-kilometer race with 800 meters of elevation gain held in Solutré-Pouilly, in the Saône-et-Loire department, at the heart of Burgundy's wine country. This event is inseparable from the Roche de Solutré, a spectacular limestone escarpment rising to 493 meters above the vineyards of the Mâconnais. Classified as a Grand Site de France, this rocky monolith is one of Burgundy's most iconic landscapes and a place steeped in prehistoric history, as the site gave its name to the Solutrean culture, an Upper Paleolithic civilization dating from approximately 22,000 to 17,000 years BCE.

The trail course offers an exceptional crossing of southern Burgundy's landscapes, weaving between the vineyards of Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran, oak forests, and limestone escarpments. Runners climb the Roche de Solutré itself — a passage as symbolic as it is physically demanding — before discovering its neighbor, the Roche de Vergisson, another limestone sentinel watching over the vines below. The trails wind through the most prestigious appellations of the Mâconnais, where the Chardonnay grape produces exceptional white wines recognized worldwide.

The course profile is hilly and technical in places, with short but steep climbs to reach the rocky summits and descents on limestone trails that can be slippery in wet conditions. The 800 meters of positive elevation gain is distributed across numerous hills, creating a sawtooth profile that constantly works the quadriceps. Ridge sections along the limestone crests offer exceptional panoramic views over the Saône valley, the Beaujolais hills, and on clear days, the Alps on the distant horizon.

The Solutré site is a place of memory on multiple levels. The Museum of Prehistory, located at the foot of the rock, houses remarkable collections bearing witness to 50,000 years of human presence. The legend of prehistoric horse hunts, in which entire herds were supposedly driven off the cliff edge, long fueled the collective imagination, even though archaeologists have since offered more nuanced interpretations. More recently, François Mitterrand's traditional ascent of the Roche de Solutré every Whit Sunday anchored this place in contemporary French political history.
