Trail de la Montagne de Lure

The Trail de la Montagne de Lure is a 40-kilometer race with 2,000 meters of elevation gain, traversing one of the most secret and best-preserved massifs of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The Montagne de Lure, the western extension of Mont Ventoux with which it shares its limestone geology and harsh climate, peaks at the Signal de Lure at 1,826 meters. This solitary mountain, nicknamed "the mountain of perfumes" for its lavender fields and aromatic herbs, is a sanctuary of wild nature between Provence and the Alps.

The course offers a complete crossing of the massif, from Provençal valleys fragrant with lavender to summit ridges swept by the mistral wind. Runners climb the southern slopes through downy oak woodlands and garrigue fragrant with thyme and savory, before reaching the beech and fir forest that encircles the mountain at mid-height. The summit ridges, bare and mineral, offer exceptional 360-degree panoramas: Mont Ventoux to the southwest, the Écrins and Dévoluy to the northeast, the Durance valley and the Haute-Provence plateaus in every direction. On clear days, the view extends to the Mediterranean.

The 2,000 meters of elevation gain are made demanding by the limestone terrain and exposure to the elements. The climbs, long and sustained, cross sharp lapiaz, unstable scree, and limestone slabs polished by wind. The northern slope, colder and wetter, harbors deep beech and fir forests where trails are carpeted with moss and leaves. The southern slope, drier and brighter, is covered with low garrigue and white scree that dazzles under the Provençal sun. The mistral, that violent and freezing northerly wind, can blow with formidable force on the ridges and make progression difficult even in summer.

The Montagne de Lure is a territory steeped in spiritual history. The Abbey of Lure, founded in the 6th century by Saint Donat, was one of the first monastic centers in Provence. Jean Giono, the writer from Manosque, celebrated this mountain in several of his works, describing it as a place of solitude and contemplation. The villages surrounding the massif — Saint-Étienne-les-Orgues, Cruis, Mallefougasse — retain an authentic Provençal charm with their fountains, wash houses, and squares shaded by plane trees. The lavender fields carpeting the foothills constitute one of the most iconic spectacles of Haute-Provence.

For international runners, the Trail de la Montagne de Lure is a discovery of secret, mountainous Provence, far from the crowds of the Côte d'Azur and the Luberon.
