The Trail du Golfe d'Ajaccio is a 30-kilometer race with 1,200 meters of elevation gain held in Ajaccio, in Corse-du-Sud (Southern Corsica), on the heights overlooking one of the most beautiful gulfs in the Mediterranean. This event offers a unique island trail running experience, blending fragrant maquis scrubland, granite ridgelines, and spectacular views over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, unfolds its natural amphitheater between sea and mountain, and the trail fully exploits this exceptional geography by taking runners from the coastline up to the summits encircling the gulf.

The Trail du Golfe d'Ajaccio course traverses the Corsican maquis in all its splendor — that dense, fragrant Mediterranean vegetation composed of cistus, lentisk, strawberry trees, myrtle, and tree heather that fills the air with an intoxicating perfume. Trails climb through this impenetrable maquis before reaching granite ridges where 360-degree panoramas unfold: the deep blue Gulf of Ajaccio, the Sanguinaires Islands blazing in the setting sun, the jagged coastline toward Propriano, and the snow-capped peaks of Corsica's interior silhouetted on the horizon.

With 1,200 meters of elevation gain over 30 kilometers, the profile is demanding and decidedly mountainous despite the proximity of the sea. Climbs are steep and technical, on pink granite trails where unstable rocks and holm oak roots demand constant vigilance. Mediterranean heat adds an extra layer of difficulty, especially during spring or summer editions, making hydration management crucial. Descents toward coves and valley floors are fast and technical, on terrain that can be dry and dusty or, after autumn rains, transformed into a red mud toboggan.
