Trail du Dévoluy

The Trail du Devoluy is a 35-kilometer trail race with 2,200 meters of elevation gain that takes place in the Devoluy massif, in the Hautes-Alpes department. The Devoluy is a limestone massif in the Southern Pre-Alps situated between the Champsaur, Trieves, and Bochaine regions. This austere and wild massif, dominated by the Obiou (2,789 m) and Grand Ferrand (2,758 m), is one of the most secret and preserved territories in the French Alps. Its mineral character, vast karst plateaus, and vertiginous gorges make it an exceptional trail running terrain.

The Devoluy is a massif of contrasts. Its exterior slopes, cut by vertical limestone cliffs, present an impressive and inhospitable aspect. But once through the gates of the massif, one discovers an interior world of vast depressions, altitude meadows, and open mountain pine forests. The karst pavement of the Bure plateau, which houses the IRAM radio astronomy observatory, evokes a lunar landscape at 2,500 meters of altitude.

The 35-kilometer Trail du Devoluy course crosses the most striking landscapes of the massif. The trails start from villages nestled in interior combes to climb toward ridges and summit plateaus. Runners move through a mineral universe where white limestone dominates, sculpted by erosion into spectacular forms: sinkholes, swallow holes, natural arches, and karst pavements. The few springs that emerge in this stone desert are all the more precious.

The 2,200 meters of positive elevation gain over 35 kilometers represent a significant vertical challenge. The race profile is marked by long and sustained climbs through limestone combes, followed by traverses across altitude plateaus and technical descents on stony trails. The karst terrain demands particular attention: limestone pavements and irregular rock surfaces can be treacherous, and exposed ridge passages require confidence.

The Devoluy climate is influenced by its southern position in the Alps. Sunshine is generous, and summers are warm in the lower parts of the massif. However, the high altitude of ridges and plateaus subjects runners to much cooler temperatures and often violent winds. Thunderstorms, when they break, can be remarkably intense in this isolated massif. The relative dryness of the massif makes hydration management particularly important.

The Devoluy's wildlife is adapted to this harsh environment. Chamois frequent the cliffs and scree, mouflon have been introduced on certain slopes, and griffon vultures reintroduced in the Pre-Alps regularly fly over the massif. The calciphilic flora is rich, with rare species adapted to the extreme conditions of karst pavements and scree.

For international runners, the Devoluy is accessible from Gap, approximately 40 kilometers away, a town served by train from Marseille and Grenoble. The A51 motorway between Grenoble and Gap provides quick access from the Rhone valley. Accommodation in the Devoluy is primarily rural, with lodges, bed-and-breakfasts, and a few hotels in the ski resorts of SuperDevoluy and La Joue du Loup.

Assistance on the Trail du Devoluy is a precious element due to the isolation of the massif and the scarcity of natural water sources. An assistant familiar with the roads and access paths of the massif can position at strategic points to provide nutrition, water, and moral support. Hydration management is particularly critical in this dry limestone massif.
