Ultra des Maures

The Massif des Maures, between Toulon and Saint-Tropez, is an ancient block of schist and granite covered in dense Mediterranean forest — cork oaks, chestnuts, mimosas — repeatedly burned but never fully stripped bare. The Ultra des Maures departs Collobrières at 10 PM on Friday night, solo in the dark forest, for a 100-kilometer loop gaining 4,700 meters of elevation. Notre-Dame-des-Anges, Pic des Sauvettes, the Treps plateau, the Chartreuse de la Verne: a geography of secret places and ruins.

Var heat can be brutal even in May, with nights that never cool enough. Dense forest blocks the wind but traps humidity. Four ITRA points, 4,700 meters of D+ on exclusively forest and Mediterranean terrain — an out-of-the-ordinary race for the Var, far from the coastal trail scene.
