Trail des Dentelles de Montmirail

The Trail des Dentelles de Montmirail is a 32-kilometre race with 1,400 metres of positive elevation gain crossing one of the most photogenic and flavourful landscapes in Provence. Starting from Gigondas, a wine village world-renowned for its powerful and silky red wines, this event explores the Dentelles de Montmirail massif, a chain of jagged limestone ridges rising like a barrier of chiselled stone between the southern Rhône vineyards and Mont Ventoux. These needles and rock blades, some rising over 500 metres in height, owe their name to their resemblance to stone lacework, sculpted by millions of years of erosion in Jurassic limestone.

The 32-kilometre course is a permanent enchantment for the senses. Runners climb from the Gigondas vineyards, first crossing parcels of Grenache and Mourvèdre whose gnarled, century-old vines root into the stony clay-limestone soils, before entering the garrigue of holm oaks, rosemary, and thyme that fill the air with a typically Provençal fragrance. The trails then climb toward the Dentelles ridges, passing through narrow cols between limestone blades, offering spectacular viewpoints of Mont Ventoux (1,912 m), the Giant of Provence that dominates the entire landscape with its white, barren mass. The descents wind through olive groves and Aleppo pine woods bathed in the golden light that has made Provence's reputation among painters.

The 1,400 metres of positive elevation gain over 32 kilometres offer a balanced and accessible profile suitable for both experienced trail runners and runners seeking an ambitious first trail experience. The terrain is varied and enjoyable: technical singletracks between limestone needles, garrigue trails on dry stony ground, vineyard paths on packed earth, forest passages on soft soil. The technicality of ridge sections, where trails sometimes run alongside impressive drops overlooking the valleys, demands sustained attention, but the course presents no alpine difficulty. Heat can be a determining factor, as inland Provence experiences high temperatures from spring onward, and wise runners favour careful hydration management and an early start.

Gigondas is a picture-postcard village, clinging to the flanks of the Dentelles de Montmirail in a setting of vines and olive trees. Its cobbled lanes, the ruins of its medieval castle, and its village square shaded by plane trees compose a Provençal scene of timeless beauty. The Gigondas appellation, one of the great crus of the Rhône Valley, produces red wines of remarkable depth and complexity, which the village's tasting cellars invite you to discover. The neighbouring villages of Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, and Sablet, all renowned for their wines, complete an exceptional viticultural landscape that makes this race a feast for the palate as much as for the legs.

For international runners, the Trail des Dentelles de Montmirail is an invitation to discover the authentic Provence of winemakers and hills, far from the Côte d'Azur's seaside clichés. Access is facilitated by Avignon TGV station (45 minutes) or Marseille airport (1h30). Accommodation in Provençal farmhouses converted into bed-and-breakfasts, amid the vineyards, offers an idyllic setting for a stay around the race. Provençal gastronomy — tapenade, Provençal daube, pieds et paquets, Banon goat cheese, Aix calissons — accompanied by the great wines of the southern Rhône, makes every meal a moment of grace. The stay can be extended with an ascent of Mont Ventoux by bike or on foot, a visit to the Palais des Papes in Avignon, the Provençal markets of Vaison-la-Romaine, or a day in the perched villages of the Luberon.
