ABOUT

About Trail de la Castagna

The Trail de la Castagna is a 25-kilometre trail race with 1,100 metres of elevation gain, starting from Cargèse, a Greco-Corsican village perched on the western coast of Corse-du-Sud. This evocatively named event — castagna means "chestnut" in the Corsican language — pays tribute to the chestnut forests that have fed the island for centuries and that form the majestic backdrop to this mountain course, between sea and maquis, between granite and shaded undergrowth.

Cargèse holds a unique place in Corsican history. Founded in the 17th century by Greek refugees from the Peloponnese fleeing Ottoman occupation, the town boasts two churches facing each other — one Latin, one Greek — bearing witness to this dual cultural identity unique in France. The Gulf of Sagone, over which Cargèse commands a striking panorama, unfurls its turquoise waters bordered by red cliffs and wild coves. It is from this idyllic Mediterranean setting that runners set off to gain the heights of the hinterland, where centuries-old chestnut groves await.

The Trail de la Castagna course climbs from the coast towards the mountainous interior along ancestral paths that once connected the coastal villages to the hamlets of the interior. The vegetation changes rapidly with altitude: the coastal maquis, dense and fragrant with its rockrose, mastic trees, and strawberry trees, gradually gives way to holm oak forests, then to the monumental chestnut groves that are the beating heart of this race. These centuries-old trees — some even a thousand years old — with their massive, gnarled trunks, form vegetal cathedrals whose canopy filters a green and golden light. The ground is carpeted with leaves and burrs, and the sweet scent of chestnut permeates the autumn air.

With 1,100 metres of elevation gain over 25 kilometres, the Trail de la Castagna offers a substantial elevation ratio that makes it a demanding event despite its moderate distance. Corsican trails, characterised by their granite surface and technical passages, test ankles and quadriceps severely. The climbs from the coast are direct and sustained, while the descents beneath the chestnut trees, on a carpet of sometimes slippery leaves, demand caution and agility. The terrain is varied: granite slabs, rooty single tracks, ridgeline passages with sea views, and stream crossings in shaded ravines.

The Corsican chestnut grove is far more than a landscape: it is a living cultural heritage. Nicknamed "the bread tree" by Corsicans, the chestnut was for centuries the foundation of the island's diet, providing the flour from which bread, polenta — the Corsican pulenda — and fritters were made. The villages crossed by the Trail de la Castagna perpetuate this tradition, and the race's aid stations showcase chestnut products: chestnut flour, fritters, jam, and chestnut beer. To run the Trail de la Castagna is to traverse a nourishing landscape laden with history, where every tree tells the story of generations of Corsicans who planted, grafted, and harvested it, in a human-nature symbiosis that has become rare and precious.
