Trail de l'Estérel

The Trail de l'Estérel is a truly unique race, crossing one of the most singular massifs on the French Mediterranean coast. Over 38 kilometres with 1,600 metres of positive elevation gain, this trail starting from Mandelieu-la-Napoule takes runners into the heart of the Estérel massif, famous for its red porphyry rocks that contrast strikingly with the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea. This volcanic formation, 250 million years old, creates a landscape without equivalent in Europe, where ochre, purple, and crimson cliff tones stand out against the dark green of maritime pines and the azure blue of the Provençal sky.

The course skilfully exploits the rugged geography of this coastal massif. From the very first kilometres, runners climb rapidly above the Bay of Cannes, discovering breathtaking panoramas of the Lérins Islands, Cap d'Antibes, and on clear days, Corsica on the horizon. The trails wind between red porphyry needles, rock formations sculpted by erosion that give the massif its unreal, almost lunar appearance in places. Technical passages on volcanic rock, sometimes smooth and slippery, sometimes rough and abrasive, demand constant attention and continuous stride adaptation. The descents toward the Estérel's secret calanques, where red rock plunges directly into crystalline waters, rank among the most memorable moments of the course.

The botanical diversity of the Estérel massif considerably enriches the sensory experience of the race. The Mediterranean maquis, composed of rockrose, strawberry trees, tree heather, and myrtle, fills the air with its characteristic fragrances, particularly intense in spring when the rockrose unfurls its white and pink blooms. Cork oak and maritime pine forests offer welcome shade on the most exposed sections, while eucalyptus trees planted in the 19th century add an exotic note to this olfactory palette. The massif is also home to discreet but present wildlife: Hermann's tortoises, one of the last continental French populations, as well as numerous Mediterranean bird species.

With its 1,600 metres of positive elevation gain spread over 38 kilometres, the Trail de l'Estérel offers a demanding profile of short but steep climbs and technical descents on volcanic terrain. The course's highest point, around Mont Vinaigre (614 m), provides a 360-degree viewpoint over the entire Côte d'Azur, from the Maures to the Mercantour. Thermal management is a crucial challenge in this race: the reverberation off the red rock amplifies the heat, and experienced runners know that hydration and pacing must be adapted to the often hot conditions prevailing in this massif, sheltered from the mistral wind.

Mandelieu-la-Napoule, the start town situated between Cannes and Fréjus, offers an ideal logistical setting for runners coming from afar. The Cannes TGV station is just minutes away, Nice-Côte d'Azur airport is half an hour distant, and the hotel offerings of the French Riviera need no introduction. The Trail de l'Estérel is a rare opportunity to discover an unknown face of the French Riviera, far from the crowded beaches and the Croisette boulevards, in a protected natural area where mountains meet the sea in an explosion of colours that only volcanic geology can provide. Companions can enjoy the beaches of Théoule-sur-Mer, the coastal paths of Cap Dramont, or a visit to Saint-Raphaël, turning this race weekend into a true Mediterranean getaway.
