Trail des 3 Pics

The Trail des 3 Pics is a 32-kilometre trail race with 1,600 metres of elevation gain, starting from Burzet, a character village situated in the heart of the Ardèche des Sources, within the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park. This demanding event takes runners to conquer three iconic volcanic peaks of upper Ardèche, through a landscape shaped by eruptions that shook the region tens of thousands of years ago, leaving behind a dramatic relief of basalt flows, eroded craters, and phonolitic domes.

Burzet, nestled in the Bourges Valley at 600 metres altitude, is a quintessentially Ardéchois village with its houses of black basalt and granite, its lauze stone roofs, and narrow lanes tumbling down towards the river. The village lies at the junction of three valleys converging in a natural amphitheatre ringed by volcanic mountains. It is this spectacular setting that gives the Trail des 3 Pics its identity: the three peaks that runners must conquer rise like sentinels above the canopy of beech and fir forests cloaking the surrounding slopes.

The course chains together the ascents of three volcanic summits, each offering a distinct geological and scenic character. The trails climb through dense beech and conifer forests, cross high-altitude meadows dotted with narcissi in spring and gentians in summer, before reaching the bare summits from which panoramas encompass the entire Ardèche volcanic massif. On clear days, the view extends to Mont Mézenc, Ardèche's highest summit at 1,753 metres, and sometimes even to the Alps and Mont Blanc. The passages along volcanic ridges, between basalt organ pipes and boulder chaos, offer spectacular running moments in a striking mineral setting.

With 1,600 metres of elevation gain over 32 kilometres, the Trail des 3 Pics demands sustained and technical effort. The three-bump profile, with steep climbs followed by sharp descents into intermediate valleys, is particularly punishing on the quadriceps and requires intelligent race management. The volcanic Ardèche trails vary in character: black basalt earth, lava slabs, unstable scree, peaty high-altitude meadows, and rooty forest paths. The weather conditions of upper Ardèche add an element of uncertainty, as summits can be shrouded in fog or swept by violent winds even in midsummer.

Volcanic Ardèche is a territory of exceptional geological and natural richness. The Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park, which encompasses the Trail des 3 Pics course, protects remarkable natural heritage including high-altitude peat bogs, crater lakes, and lava flows among the most recent in continental Europe — the Thueyts flow, just 40,000 years old, is visible from certain points on the course. The wildlife includes peregrine falcons nesting on basalt cliffs, otters in the valley-floor rivers, and Apollo butterflies on the summit meadows.
