Trail de Trévarez

The Trail de Trévarez is a 30-kilometre trail race with 800 metres of elevation gain, starting from Châteauneuf-du-Faou, a small character town in Finistère, in central Brittany. This event takes runners through the hilly, wooded landscapes surrounding the Trévarez estate, a Belle Époque château nestled in the heart of the Montagnes Noires, in a setting where Breton forest, salmon rivers, and architectural heritage blend into a tableau of verdant and mysterious beauty.

Châteauneuf-du-Faou overlooks the Aulne Valley, a canalised river winding through a green setting in the heart of inland Finistère. This small town, known for its traditional pardons and horse fairs, is the gateway to the Montagnes Noires, a chain of schistose hills crossing Brittany from east to west and peaking at 318 metres at Roc'h Toullaëron. The Trévarez estate, listed as a historic monument, is this race's jewel: this neo-Gothic château in pink brick, built between 1893 and 1907 by the president of the Finistère General Council, presides over an 85-hectare landscaped park planted with camellias, rhododendrons, and hydrangeas that have made Brittany's horticultural reputation.

The Trail de Trévarez course unfolds through the forests and valleys surrounding the estate. The trails pass through beech and oak woods with imposing canopies, run along the banks of the Aulne where Atlantic salmon return each autumn to spawn, and climb the ridges of the Montagnes Noires from where views stretch to the Monts d'Arrée in the north. The Breton sunken lanes — those "ribinnoù" bordered by banks planted with hazel and holly — are the thread running through this race, connecting isolated farms and granite hamlets with slate roofs in a network of paths centuries old.

With 800 metres of elevation gain over 30 kilometres, the Trail de Trévarez offers a rolling profile typical of inland Brittany, consisting of short but repeated climbs and swift descents into valleys. The Breton terrain, composed of schist and granite, can prove slippery in wet weather — which is frequent in Finistère — and exposed roots in the sunken lanes add a technical dimension to every descent. Muddy passages are the norm rather than the exception, and runners must contend with ground that varies from compact to waterlogged within a few metres, characteristic of Brittany's saturated soils.

The Trail de Trévarez is deeply rooted in the Breton culture of inland Finistère, that "Kreiz Breizh" which cultivates its identity with fervour. The race crosses a landscape shaped by centuries of Breton agriculture and forestry: dense bocage, livestock meadows where Breton pie noire cattle graze, buckwheat plots, and cider apple orchards. The atmosphere is warm and festive, reflecting Breton conviviality: aid stations offer crêpes, far breton, and farmhouse cider, while biniou and bombarde players sometimes accompany runners over the final kilometres. The Trail de Trévarez is an invitation to discover a little-known Brittany — one of deep forests and secret valleys, far from the tourist coastline, in a setting that evokes the tales and legends of the Breton country.
