Trail du Bout du Monde

The Trail du Bout du Monde is a 55-kilometer trail race with 1,400 meters of elevation gain that starts from Camaret-sur-Mer, at the tip of the Crozon Peninsula, in Finistere. Its evocative name, meaning "Trail at the End of the World," is well earned: this event takes runners to the westernmost reaches of mainland France, where the land ends before the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Crozon Peninsula, situated between the Brest harbor and the Bay of Douarnenez, is a territory of exceptional geological and scenic value. Its jagged cliffs, sea caves, headlands, and capes form one of the wildest coastlines in France. The Armorique Regional Natural Park, which encompasses the peninsula, protects this remarkable natural heritage where Atlantic heathland, relict forests, and wetlands coexist.

The Trail du Bout du Monde course follows the coastal paths that trace the outline of the peninsula. Runners discover the Pointe de Pen-Hir, whose 70-meter cliffs overlook the Tas de Pois, rocky islets rising from the ocean like the columns of a sunken temple. The spectacle is grandiose, especially during heavy swells, when waves crash against the quartzite walls in a thunder of white foam.

The 1,400 meters of elevation gain accumulate through the climbs and descents that punctuate the coastal route. The terrain is varied and technical: slippery schist trails, passages through dunes, sunken lanes bordered by dry-stone walls, and crossings of pebble beaches. Weather conditions often add an extra dimension to the challenge, with westerly winds potentially blowing with considerable force on exposed sections.

Camaret-sur-Mer, the start and finish village, is a former fishing port of authentic charm. Its colorful houses, Notre-Dame de Rocamadour chapel, and Vauban Tower, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, create a striking departure setting. Runners set off in the early morning, when fishing boats gently sway in the harbor and sea mist envelops the peninsula.

The Trail du Bout du Monde also crosses the interior of the peninsula, where sunken lanes and maritime pine woods offer a welcome contrast to the coastal exposure. Rural hamlets, with their granite farms and walled gardens, bear witness to the daily life of a community that has looked to the sea for centuries.
