Trail des Balcons du Léman

This race offers one of the most beautiful lakeside panoramas in the Alps, with breathtaking views of the largest lake in Western Europe, the Swiss Alps, and the Jura mountains. The term "balcons" (balconies) refers to the natural ledges and balcony trails that traverse the slopes above Lake Geneva, offering an aerial perspective on this immense body of water.

Lake Geneva, shared between France and Switzerland, is a crescent-shaped lake stretching 72 kilometers in length and reaching a maximum depth of 310 meters. Its southern shore, on the French side, is bordered by the foothills of the Chablais and the first slopes of the Haute-Savoie Pre-Alps. It is on these slopes that the Trail des Balcons du Leman takes place, through a landscape where lakeside gentleness meets mountain ruggedness.

The climate of the Lake Geneva shore is particularly mild for Haute-Savoie. The lake's regulating effect attenuates temperature extremes, and the lush vegetation on south-facing slopes testifies to this clemency. Mediterranean species such as chestnut and boxwood thrive at low altitude, creating an unusual vegetative atmosphere for the Northern Alps. At altitude, the climate becomes more typically mountainous, with cooler temperatures and more abundant precipitation.

For international runners, the Trail des Balcons du Leman is ideally located. The southern shore of Lake Geneva is less than an hour from Geneva airport, one of the main European air hubs. The towns of Evian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains, accessible by train from Geneva and Annemasse, offer numerous accommodation options, from thermal hotels to vacation rentals. The region is also served by boats of the Compagnie Generale de Navigation crossing the lake from Switzerland.

Assistance on the Trail des Balcons du Leman is facilitated by the proximity of roads and villages lining the lakeshore. An assistant can easily follow the runner's progress and meet them at several points along the course. The moderate distance of the race makes assistance less critical than on ultras, but logistical and moral support remains appreciated, especially for runners discovering the terrain.
